Adventure

Lukas Irmler

When an artistic soul is driven by a thirst for adventure, sport itself becomes art. For over 20 years, highliner Lukas Irmler has been creating pathways between distant points – the edges of waterfalls, hot-air balloons floating high above the ground, and mountain peaks – seemingly defying the old saying that “mountains never meet.” He fills the space between the points with his passion, making it a little less elusive, as if the highline opened a portal to another dimension. Along the way, Lukas explores some of the wildest corners of the globe and continues to break world records.

How would you describe your relationship with nature?

Nature is far more than a playground for me; it's our home and where I feel most alive and happy to be. I love all kinds of landscapes and also really like how harsh and unforgiving nature can be. I'm eternally fascinated by how the Alps change with the seasons. I enjoy how one place can transform so much over the course of a year and offer different opportunities along the way.

If Mother Nature could talk, what do you think she would tell us humans?

Stop! Stop and start thinking. Slow down. Change. Sustain. I think many places and natural phenomena are screaming at us to change our behaviour if we want to sustain the natural habitats we live in.

Which expedition experience has shaped you most as a person?

The highline at the Grand Capucin – it took us 3 attempts over 3 consecutive years to finally climb both sides and connect them with a 200m highline at an elevation of 3,838m, just below Mont Blanc. It demanded that I evolve from a sport climber into an alpinist on many levels and also introduced me to the logistics of real big-wall highlining. It was also a great lesson in how to keep a team together and motivated after some heavy failures, not give in to doubts, but believe in a dream and pursue it, no matter how long it takes.

What basic qualities should your expedition partner have?

Persistence, a variety of skills, creativity and, most of all, a smile, even when “shit hits the fan” :)

Which LYO product can’t you imagine going on an expedition without?

The Nettle Curry is a must-have, since it really fuels not only my body but also my happiness after long days out.

If you were not a mountain athlete, who would you be?

An artist of some sort.

Why highlining then?

Because it’s the only form of art I’m good at. It combines so many skills I love into one big picture and is such a creative puzzle to solve, yet so rewarding when you add a new pathway to the world. Somehow, it always feels like a portal to another dimension.
